A vino da tavola, so no vintage is printed on the label. However, the wine's lot number (C1/2014) tells more than enough. Made from biodynamically grown Catarratto grapes, vinified according to a strict hands-off philosophy. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.
The wine is obviously unfiltered, as its appearance is hazy straw yellow. The nose feels really expressive with opulent, wild aromas of mushy bananas, leesy creaminess, some overripe apricots, a little bit of apple jam and hints of honey and beeswax. The wine is wild, full-bodied and ever-so-slightly sweet on the palate with intense flavors of banana yoghurt, apricots, some honey, a little bit of leathery brett, a hint of exotic spices - something like garam masala - and an umami touch of kombu. The wine is quite concentrated and oily on the palate, yet its high acidity makes the wine feel remarkably fresh and lively despite its big body and ripe, sweet-toned flavors. The finish is quite dense and concentrated with very long flavors both sweet and rich in umami: banana, some dried apricots, a little bit of honey, a hint of wild, bretty funk and a touch of exotic spice.
Although an impossible wine to guess correctly blind - this didn't taste like Catarratto (or any Sicilian wine) at all, but instead just wild and funky natural wine - but nevertheless a compelling, complex and harmonious wine. Sure, it is big, ripe and funky, but it pulls all those characteristics off with remarkable ease. I can imagine wine purists who like their wines fruity and squeaky clean will have trouble with this wine, but the quality is there: there's remarkable power and intensity yet tremendous freshness to the fruit here. Maybe not true to a traditional varietal Catarratto, but I don't mind. This is delicious. Priced according to its quality at approx. 40€.
