  • The San Marzano Collezione Cinquanta is a towering beast of a wine. It's a swaggering, black fruited hunk of ultra rich concentrated flavour, made from a blend of Negroamaro and Primitivo that comes off gnarly old bush vines in the San Marzano area of Puglia.

Presented in a wildly heavy bottle, the Cinquanta comes complete with some of the most adjective-heavy tasting notes imaginable, not to mention a ginormous 98 point score from Italian critic Luca Maroni and 4 gold medals to its name.

Oh yes, it's a barnstorming mega red, with huge flavours and the structure to match. Do you know what else sets this wine apart? Well, it doesn't have a vintage! Turns out this is a special blend of 2012 Primitivo and 2013 Negroamaro, just because San Marzano thinks it is the best wine they can make.

COLLEZIONE CINQUANTA means Collection Fifty. It was first produced for the 50th anniversary of the winery. It is 50% Primitivo aged in new French and American barriques and 50% Negroamaro aged in new French and Caucasian barriques. We have decided for a complex Primitivo with a more young and fruity Negroamaro. It is a NV because we blend different vintages but also because in this way the winemaker is free to make a good wine without any restrictions given by the denominations. The dates on the bottle are the 50 vintages produced in the first 50 years of the winery.

    Wine category: Vino Rosso d’Italia.

Vine varieties: Red vine varieties typical of the Salento area.

Production area: San Marzano, Salento, Puglia. Vines are grown at an altitude of around 100 meters above sea level. The soil is clayey and not very deep, with a good presence of rocks. Medium/high temperature in summer, with good evapotranspiration.

Vinification: Hand-harvest of lightly overripe grapes; de-stemming and crushing; cold pre-fermenting maceration; alcoholic fermentation with autochthonous yeasts. Final drawing off with soft pressing machines. Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks; ageing in fine French wood barrels for about 12 months.

Ageing potential: A wine that preserves its organoleptic characteristics for 7 years.

Tasting notes: Ruby red colour with purple reflections; intense and complex bouquet with fruity notes of prune and red jam and spicy scent of vanilla and licorice. Intense on the palate, full-bodied and soft with a long aftertaste. Best served with red meat, game, savoury first courses. Meditation wine. Serve around 18°C.
