  • Part of a dinner with my wine group. This was a big hit. It tasted younger than its years. Bigger and a longer finish than I remember from previous bottles.

  • Part of a Rhone wine tasting with wine friends, and the only Northern Rhone of the night. Enjoyed by everyone. Pepper notes on the nose, medium + length finish, but otherwise, no real notes.

  • I recall this wine on release as being rather welcoming but clearly with the structure to do well over time. On revisiting, some 3 years later, I see that wasn't a bad judgement. Right now it is probably in one of those 'middle years slumbers' that some wines experience. It is very enjoyable at the present, but it has lost the early exuberance and it has closed up a bit, whilst remaining fresh and with a tannin structure that will carry it for a long time to come.

The dominant flavours are dark plums with some berry accents that, to me, come closer to either very fragrant blackberry, or blueberry. The acid takes me more to blueberry and the plum flavours also include a touch of sour. It is possible that the sour notes will divide drinkers; some won't like it, but I do. it balances the wine and it is the antithesis of those baked, dead fruit wines.

If I only had a bottle or two of this, I would be inclined to leave it for a minimum of 5 years and I think it will easily handle 10 (subject to inherent vagaries of cork as a closure). Interesting to see that Crozes-Hermitage can produce serious, quality wines that are very capable of long lives. In the end it may mostly be about Hermitage, but it isn't only about Hermitage.

  • Deep purple in color. Notes of cherry, plum, cinnamon, and pepper.
