Lunch chez moi with AG, JP & FG (The Shed, Ealing): 2 of 3. Drunk after a 2010 Bertheau Chambolle 1er Charmes. This was in a good place in terms of having fine aromatics and feeling ready on the palate. Some dark mahogany and old leather (and alcolol) notes together with a definite touch of Vosne spice in the finish. Yet this remained frustratingly curmudgeonly and somewhat grumpy and stylistically strict in offering up its wares. Perhaps on it's own it would have shone more.

Burgundy Wimps — Le Bout du Monde (La Trompette, London): Curious one this. Slightly gently muddy, and a touch volatile. Something not right but. NR. However, after three hours in the glass it’s a reformed character: still an acidic spine but altogether more together. It’s blossomed. ***1/2

No problems here (pace earlier note). Balanced, traditional but not at all chunky, earth, a little raw meat/game, cherry, creamy texture. Not, it is true, at the highest level of complexity or refinement but a proper mid-mature (plenty of time in hand and indeed improving if you want them funkier I'd guess) old-fashioned burgundy.

Meaty ruby. Dark, meaty, chocolatey, black fruit on the nose. Quite reticent still. Cool sweet fruit on the mouth entry, then building with spice and meat. Really quite full. The finish is long and taut. Excellent, and should improve further. ****

(Lamarche Francois Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts) Medium cherry-red. Interesting nose, depth, sweetness and a dark but creamy edge - quite forward.Very good acidity and finely textured tannins. At best this is only medium density but shows way above average interest and length. Very tasty and enjoyed.

Seattle Burgundy Group Tasting #5 Vosne Romanée (Triage Warehouse): This bottle may have been flawed but here it goes anyway . . .
Pale Ruby, garnet edge. The nose is dirty & musty, with mint, cranberry and unpleasant chemical aromas.
The palate was sappy and a little green, but very soft, and hollow. This wine must be corked.
