I can't say I've ever been a huge fan of Vinho Verde -- it's mostly fine for what it is, which is generally light and refreshing -- but this example, a blend of Alvarinho and Trajadura from the Monção e Melgaço sub-region, at the very north end of the Vinho Verde region just south of the Spanish border (Minho River), brings more to the table than the norm. It has more body than the generally light and refreshing examples, but it's also quite spritzy, which cuts nicely through the flabbiness that takes over as it warms, while before that there's lovely lemon-lime, grapefruit, raw almond, white flowers, and light minerality, along with fleshy stone fruit (mostly peach). That makes for an admirably complex mix of aromas and flavours, with structure that keeps it fairly light still and certainly still refreshing but that also provides weight and depth.

Simple nose of citrus, limes, apricot, unripe peach. Palate of lime, green mango, unripe stone fruit. Good acid. Very simple wine, maybe a bit more fruit than would be expected from another basic Vinho Verde. But still simple, but for the ~3.50 euro price in Portugal it's a fair price.

Pale lemon yellow in the glass with a grassy nose supported by juicy hints of lime juice, green apple and unripe apricot. Fizzy, refreshing and dense with extract. Just the right amount of acidity to cheer up even a rainy day and definitely a highly food-pairing diverse wine. Great stuff.
