  • Straits Wines - “The Sommelier” Blind Challenge - Round 1 (Straits Wines @ UE Square): Deep purple with thick legs. Pronounced aromas of blackberry, purple flowers, blackcurrant leaf, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a slight vinegary volatile acid. Dry, tannic, with some acid hits, alcohol heat and a full body. Ripe blackberry and prune flavours and nutmeg and cinnamon, with tea leaf. A long finish. Nice!

  • The grapes are sourced from vineyards aged 15 to 45 years old. Aged for 16 months in used (4 yo) barrels. 14,5% alcohol.

Dense, fully opaque blackish-red color. Ripe, somewhat developed and quite attractive nose with harmonious aromas of slightly wizened dark fruits and juicy blackberries, some gamey meat, a little bit of peppery spice, light minty herbal notes, a hint of earthy spice and a touch of alcohol. The wine is ripe, full-bodied and quite rich on the palate with rather concentrated flavors of juicy blackberries and plummy dark fruit, some meaty umami, a little bit of alcohol warmth, light peppery notes, a little bit of extracted bitterness, a hint of espresso and a touch of charred game. The wine is enjoyably high in acidity with ripe, mellow and quite modest tannins that contribute mainly to the texture, not to the structure. The finish is ripe, long and quite warm with bold flavors of sunny dark fruits, meaty umami and roasted game, some brambly blackberry tones, a little bit of extracted woody bitterness, light earthy tones and a hint of jammy dark fruit. The tannins make the wine end on a very gently grippy note.

A very juicy, tasty and harmonious Aussie Shiraz with good emphasis on purity of ripe fruit and good balance between the high acidity and dense, concentrated body. What the wine is missing, though, is tannins: the wine feels bit and muscular, but when you expect the tannins to punch you in the face (like they should), the wine just pats you gently for a short while. What that does, is it makes the wine feel somewhat lopsided, and while the acidity keeps the wine enjoyably fresh and structured, the fruit still feels too soft and even slightly flabby. Overall this is a nice and well-made effort of an Australian Shiraz, but it could be so much better good tannic backbone. Overall the wine shows solid value at 18€.
