  • "Natural" Vinho Verde Alvarinho. 12,5% alcohol.

Moderately cloudy pale yellow color. Open and rather aromatic nose with expressive aromas of peach, some wild waxy character, a little bit of grapefruit lemonade, a hint of tangerine and a touch of sharp and not-really-sweet pineapple lemonade. Really lemonade-y nose, if you ask me. The wine is medium-bodied, steely and mineral on the palate, but not really as high in acidity as I'd expect an Alvarinho to be. There are quite savory flavors of green apples, some quince, a little bit of wild waxy character, alight stony mineral bitterness and a hint of starfruit. Although relatively light on the palate, the mouthfeel is still somewhat concentrated and oily, probably thanks to the unfiltered nature of the wine. The finish is lively, mineral and tangy with savory flavors of stony minerality, some smoky chracter, a little bit of apple peel bitterness and a hint of chalk.

A nice, broad and quite mineral Alvarinho Vinho Verde with an obviously wild and waxy character if compared to more typical wines of the region. This vintage felt somewhat drier and tangier compared to the 2015, but the previous vintage carried itself a bit better with slightly higher acidity. Overall this was perhaps slightly less funky than the previous vintage, but still pretty much outside the box of your typical Alvarinho. Definitely interesting, albeit perhaps not to everyone's tastes. I'd love to see how this wine behaves after a few years of cellaring.
