Northern Rhone tasting (Utregs Wijnhuis, Utrecht, NL): This spent 2 hours in a decanter, but still it was hard to look beyond the oak. On the (medium+) nose mainly vanilla with butter, caramel, beewax, some tropical fruit and ripe melon. Acidity is medium- and the palate is a bit shallow, not in balance with the nose. Bitter medium finish. 85% Marsanne, 15% Roussanne from ~60 year old vines. Wine has spent 12 months on 30% new oak and 70% 1 year old oak

This was opened accidentally - I meant to grab the red of the exact same name. Nose of tropical fruit, oak, candle wax and crushed herbs. Palate had glazed pineapple, oak, vanillin, lemon sherbert, and savory herbs. Medium minus acidity, full body, medium plus length on the finish. This needed years and I only realized I grabbed the wrong bottle after I had started pouring with an audible "oh shit..." Oh well. It's still enjoyable now, but it will integrate over the years into something much more complex than what it is now, give 5 years for sure, but maybe not much more than 10.

This wine has 3 distinct phases, each of which is expansive yet refined. White Rhones arre becoming a favorite category. 91+
