Ideally stored example with a sound cork. Medium expressive nose displaying concentrated slightly dry jammy black fruit, blackberry jam, fruitcake, a hint of tobacco, molasses and earth. Excellent concentration, packed ripe black fruit, remains dense, very ripe and deeply toned, medium acidity, earth mineral, and a medium long ripe black fruit driven finish. I wonder if the modern CDP will develop like this. It may not be a good thing as this is a bit too straightforward and ripe.

Vinetasters: Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Odd musty nose that doesn't strike me as TCA, but not entirely pleasant either. The palate is quite sweet, and shows a little more simple, and that mustiness seems to persist here. A little dirtier than I like it. My 11th, group's 2nd. (Maybe the glass this ended up in was a bit dirty?)

Quite old in color but somewhat cloudy even after it was left standing for half a day. Not much of a nose. The fruit has faded and was making a brave stand against the heat. Old grenache - licorice, dried cherries and some savoury flavours. Overall, not as dead as I expected but definitely needs to be drunk.

Savory, full bodied, and drinking wonderfully now. This bottle had excellent fill and would go another 20 years.
