I score a case of this every other year religiously...but I often age it too long. Austria is a tightwad for exporting, of course.
Wachau is one of the spectacular winemaking regions of the world, especially the Smaragd! (pronounced Sma-rocked) Can you believe this region is named after a lizard!?
Nose: imagine peering into a stream & you pick up a mossy rock & give it a big sniff...it has that minerality - with pepper & pineapple. This 'green wine of Veltlin' does not disappoint.
The palate? Off-dry, medium+ acid, medium - body...but everything nicely balanced, with a rich mouthfeel. (better than Riesling, imo!)
However, this vintage can go longer, as it's still a little bubbly. 1-3 years, easy.

I love this stuff ... if I go down to my cellar I often decide for a bottle of bergdistel .. for me it’s a typical fresh GV Smaragd for a very reasonable price ..

Wonderful nose of stone fruit, minerals lemon. Racy nose and palate like a Riesling GG. Very good aromatic complexity and long finish. A wonderful white wine, I think you will have to spent USD125+ on a white Burg to get this level of complexity.

Explosive palate of fresh floral notes, minerality and high acidity. Keeps you coming back for more with the acid and stone fruit undertones. Delicious.
