Costiera Amalfitana; 5/16/2016-5/25/2016: No decant. Mature yet still aggressive, big brawny deep red fruit, tons of chocolate, dried mushroom on the nose weaves into the palate, where the alcohol sticks out a bit (a flaw but also a Maculan trademark). This is great wine. It could last a few years, but I will drink my remaining bottles in 2016 and suggest others do the same.

Received this bottle at Maculan's estate at a dinner during VinItaly. Actually filled and corked the bottle myself! (note that this is from a single barrel, and may not reflect the final assemblage). Very deep color, still vibrant with royal purple hues. Pronounced aromas of ripe fruit - a forest full of berries, as well as cassis, plum - and lovely vanilla, violet, and cedar. On the palate, this was absolutely glorious - with a full refrain of the aromas as well as obvious but not obtrusive oak character. Supple, silky smooth, the tannins are fully ripe and mature. Will hold for years yet, but this is so incredible, why should you wait? A great start to 2008!

5/13/2016 - Lype Likes this wine:
Powerful and good, earthy tones, spicy aromatics and dark berries, very tasty and nice tertiary aromas, 2001 was a good vintage for this wine.
