  • 13.5% alcohol. Excellent cork with no wine penetration at all. Decanted for an hour; in retrospect, I should have used a wider decanter. The colour is beginning to fade, and there is plenty of deposit in spite of decanting no more than 3/4 of the bottle.
Enchanting nose with pot pourri and mixed red stewed fruit (confiture de vieux garçon); no sign of oak. I could sniff this all day long. The mouth adds surprising liveliness and superb length; there is good grip, but the overall impression is one of harmony. Close enough in spirit to Barolo, I think.
A very classy Hermitage pretty close to maturity.

  • On the decline. Lacked interest or depth. Drinkable ... drink up if you have any.

  • Deep ruby garnet with medium plus to high optical density and a dull specular reflectivity. The nose is nicely intense and medium complexity, showing brush and bramble, dark fruits that are very ripe (just short of stewed), and a nice aromatic floral aspect. On the palate there is full body, medium plus acidity, and a dense texture that shows a really excellent polished yet rugged character, with firm structured tannins that really frame things very well. Flavours of dark fruits and bramble lead on the attack, with a richness that comes on toward midpalate, with some savory tobacco and juicy anise flavours that support the brambly fruits. There is also a good bit of olive and some iodine-infused meatiness to be found here, but in the background, behind some aromatic balsamic. The wine really shines here, as the ripe flavours are just on the edge of jammy, but with a texture that does not lean that way, keeping things in balance. The finish is long and rich, with some spicy flavours, black pepper, and some savory iodine lingering for good length with excellent intensity.

Overall, this is a really nice wine, with a rich array of complex flavours. Definitely on the ripe and juicy side, but with structure and class. Really shows its age very well, with things showing an integrated complexity, with layers of savory character that have blended. Excellent and thoughtful wine that is ready to be enjoyed or can go for a good long while longer. Excellent!

  • UWS (@ JB): In the bouquet minerals, blood, bacon and some sweet fruits. On the palate the same fruits, some oak, good herbs and spices, medicine and chocolate. A firm amount of sweetness and also a lot of good acidity. Beautiful tannin. A beautiful and complete wine with a good concentration. Early maturity now and around 2018+ probably showing even more complexity and finesse.

  • Still a baby. Nose of dark fruit, flowers, tobacco, smoke, game and truffles. "Like a bouquet of roses & dead bunnies," said one co-taster. Blackberries, pipe tobacco and earth mix in the silky palate, with a LONG finish that also features more smoke and black liquorice. Very well done.
