Community Tasting Notes (11) Avg Score: 92.1 points

  • This has improved greatly since our last tasting almost two years ago. Though it took about 2-3 hours to fully open up in the decanter, it eventually brought a deep, violet floral nose with beef stock and minerals. The palate is evolving to show delineated fruit, with plum, blueberries, and high-toned cherries, followed by wood smoke, peppered beef jerky, and candied blackberries into a tannic finish. Overall, this wine is developing a nice sweetness on the palate to balance out the bone-dry structure and tail. Will only get better, so drink 2025-2035. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 92.

  • 2015 Domaine Barge Côte Rôtie Cuvée de Pléssy. Alc 13.5%
    Dark dense purple
    Nose of leather and barnyard
Palate is sweet with smoked meat, leather , iodine and iron. Classic profile. Still wound tightly with moderate tannins

  • Opened and decanted 1.5 hours ahead of mixed grill leftovers (steak and pork). This needed at least double this air time. Candied cherry nose with blackcurrant and musty forest floor, tar, and funk notes on the nose. The palate is medium full, square, compact, and inaccessible, bringing a core of unspecified black fruit mixed with minerals, herbs, olives, and some lingering pepper notes. The finish is tannic and hard, suggesting this will be best 2025-2035. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 90.

  • I love these wines from Barge--they hit exactly what I want out of Cote Rotie. There's such a refined elegance here, balancing the meaty, savory notes with a subtle delicacy. This hits all the classic notes--white pepper (so much pepper), violets, blackberries, black cherries, black raspberry, olive, and smoke. The palate is just a touch uninviting with some firm tannins, but those soften with a bit of air revealing a silky texture.

A real joy to drink at the moment, but there are decades ahead for this wine.

  • Give it plenty time to open up - I pulled the cork several hours before serving. You will be rewarded by a young wine that is just beginning to show what it can do. Well-balanced, fine-grained, plenty of life ahead.
