The booze is noticeable but as a high proof whiskey drinker I hardly find it a bother. Big round flavor but I almost wish it were a little more tannic. Somewhat medicinal (maybe it’s the booze) but rich and satisfying. I only worry that I will drink it too fast.

Vinturi-decanted and serially tasted over the ensuing two hours, this deep ruby wine (a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah) is one that benefits from the aeration. When fully ventilated, ripe blackberries and raspberries are flanked with mulling spices, Provençal herbs and sassafras. Full-bodied, fresh, softly oaked and with velvety tannins, it stays dense on the mid-palate but is a bit warm by virtue of its 15% alcohol (even when served at the appropriate temperature of 60-65°F). That same alcoholic heat is pervasive on the lengthy back end. There is a lot to like about this Châteauneuf, but it has crossed the ripeness barrier for those more inclined to traditional offerings. Drink now-2030.

A touch of sweetness, but in balance. Even better on day 2…that would rate a 92.

Needs at least an hour after decanting to open up. A pleasure to enjoy over a long meal.
