  • Tasted Blind

A: Pale ruby (with an orange rim)
N: medium nose of strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, sour cherry, hibiscus tea, cloves- whole cluster woody (Lyndall) fennel, meaty, savoury, umami and wet stone
P: Dry, medium acidity (13%), high alcohol, medium (+) intensity, high tannin (medium + from others) , medium (+) body and medium finish
C: a little bitter but balanced, clipped length but good intensity. Not complex. Good quality. Not suitable for ageing given the lower acid levels.

    Guesses:
Old world owing to the wet rock
warm climate owing to the lower acid
Pinot Noir given the fruit but the acidity and tannin was wrong. Mind you, the acidity was wrong for Nerello Mascalese too.

    Misses:
Etna Rosso DOC can be blended with other grapes including Nerello Cappuccio and other local varieties which may have affected that acidity but volcanic grown grapes tend to be high in acid so I have no idea, how I would have arrived at this conclusion.

    Norello Mascele from Etna….not pinot

  • Mineral but full of fruits. Thin mouth feel with light tannins.

  • PnP, but definitely benefits from about 20 minutes of air time. The wine is light ruby in color, and medium to minus in body. There are flavors of tart cherry as well as other light red fruits, some earth, medium acidity, and a touch of drying tannins. Only my second experience with Nerello Mascalese and I was not impressed. Maybe I need to go higher on the quality scale?

  • A little heavier on the palate than expected, doesn't have as much lift as I expect from Etna Rosso. Medium plus acidity, some red fruit on the palate, but not as distinct as I'd like. Definitely would classify this as "table wine"

  • First time drinking anything from the Etna DOC, and first time drinking Nerello Mascalese. Pretty solid daily drinker with a great QPR. Notes of wild strawberries, red currant, blood orange, dried rose petals, leather, flint, and mild hints of smoke.
