This has to be one of my wines of the year, which shows you how easily it was wine of the night on the night. An absolutely incredible bottle of Paul Jaboulet Aîné’s Hermitage ‘La Chapelle’ from 1982 - the type of bottle you hope to never see the bottom of. The nose was everything I love about the Northern Rhône as pepper, baking spices, and a hint of cinnamon worked across blackcurrants and a rustic cigar box scent. The palate had lot of power left as redcurrants and cranberries medlied across a tertiary mid-palate of cedar wood, spices and herbs, continuing into a finish that brought in earthiness, mushrooms and a hint of truffle. A rustically elegant wine that was a joy to drink on the night.

Northern Rhone-a-thon: This pours light garnet in the glass. The nose is very lifted and aromatic of red currant, creosote, cracked black pepper, capers, fresh ginger, iron, brine, cement, diesel, and dried rose petals. The palate is velvety prominently featuring crunchy berry fruit alongside the wild secondary elements of the nose showing caper brine, beef broth, and grilled meat on the finish that fans out nicely. Loved this and a vintage of Chapelle that is often overlooked. Just so elegant and beautiful. My descriptions on this may sounds overly mature but this bottle was far from it and drinking with plenty of energy and life. Just a glorious bottle that I could easily be underrating a tad.

With Michael Lehmann and Brett Raven at Michael's house. Medium dark ruby. Definite full-blown Rhone nose. Smoke, game, leather. Excellent in the mouth. Rich, intense, excellent balance, beefy, full body. Long in the mouth. Tremendous. Excellent wine all around. 5-12-17-8: 92/100.

Salon Focofi Paris walkabout and dinner, so no detailed tasting notes. After the slightly oxidative 1989 sample came this glorious bottle. Wonderful notes of farmyard, red fruit, spices, leather.

My favorite of 14 vintages in a vertical tasting from 1970-2015. Everything we love about Northern Rhone, and drinking like the best of the wildest Cote Roties: a gorgeous field of violets , lilacs, roses, “cowpies”, and barnyard. Deep and penetrating black fruit, structured in smooth tannin and just enough acidity. Bloody ferrous minerality, length and elegance. Superb, and probably 10 years of great drinking ahead.
