Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose started with a hint of barnyard followed by aromas of white pepper, rose petals and berries. Flavors of berries, cherries and a hint of raspberries. Medium to tart acidity, medium tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold.

Still beautifully perfumed with burgudian truffles and earth atop mushy cherries and stewed strawberries. Silky soft palate of savory stewed fruit tea with some sweet roots, damp earth and loads of mushroom all wrapped up in red floral petals.

Beautiful nose. Lovely perfume, dark red flowers, liqourice, and roses. Fresh red fruits, strawberries and plum. Vibrant acidity, supple elegant tannins, fresh fruitiness, tea leaves and dark cherries on the finish. Excellent.

"Simple" Friday Dinner: Guan Hin (Guan Hin / Extra Space): When so many 1998s are improving or at a good drinking plateau, this bottling seems to show a little less well every time I have had the chance to try it over the last few years. Still a good wine no doubt, very yummy, but this certainly was not quite as good as the last few bottles. It started with a rich, warm nose, redolent with dark plums and macerated cherries seasoned with wood spice and earth. A nice ripely sweet bouquet there, not bad at all. The palate carried on the same note - rich, thickly layered, with dark berries and cherries at the fore. There was not a hint of 1998 hardness here, this was plush and ripe, almost soft all the way into the finish. In fact, it was so plush that the tannins seemed almost a bit mushy, making me guess Beaune or Pommard rather than Vosne - while it had the power of the terroir and the clear depth of a wine from good 1er Cru terroir, it just lacked the cut and focus I would expect of a good Suchots, or from most Vosne 1er Crus at that. Almost a bit rustic in a way. The finish was decent, but not great, closing with a final touch of wood spice. Maybe I am being a bit picky, because the wine was very pleasurable, especially when drank with a bit of meat, but I would call this a good bottle of Burgundy and not much more.

Pre-Birthday Warmup Dinner with Friends (Yusho - Chicago IL): Overall very simple, seemingly slightly past its peak. Bottle stored properly by its original owner since release.
