  • Very reductive and funky but lovely dried raspberry and rocky red gravel minerality

  • A blend of Vijariego Negro, Tintilla, Listán Negro, Baboso Negro and Malvasia Rosada. Aged for 9 months in Allier oak barrels of 228 and 500 liters. 13% alcohol.

Very translucent and relatively pale raspberry red color, almost thin. Heavily reductive nose with pronounced rotten egg aromas along with some gunpowder smoke. It takes some time for the nose to open up and exhibit aromas of raspberries, some volcanic smoky character, a little bit of ground peppercorns and hints of umami. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and crunchy on the palate with very savory flavors of gamey meat, tart cranberries, fresh and juicy wild strawberries, some earthy notes of licorice root and hints of sweeter dark berries. Structure-wise the wine reminds me of classic cool-climate Pinot Noir with its bright and nervous acidity along with lightly grippy medium tannins. Overall this vintage felt a bit more tannic than the mellow vintage 2015. The finish is dry, firm and crunchy with subtle reductive skunk, a little bit of tannic grip and focused flavors of black pepper, brambly blackberries, some stony mineral bitterness and a lingering hint of volcanic smoky character.

A very nice and crunchy red that feels both very youthful and very reductive - some cellaring might remedy both of these shortcomings. However, once the reduction starts to blow off, the wine is pretty delicious already - although some food could benefit the wine, smoothening its bitterness and bright, almost racy acidity. Stunning value at only 13,82€.
