Deep ruby. Earthy nose, repeated on palate with black fruit and a nice mineral tang. Had it with a spicy Thai stir-fry and it held up nicely---so a versatile food wine, I think.

Needed an hour to show itself, and I'm not sure '15 is Ponce's best showing (I might want a bit brighter acidity), but man is this cool stuff for the price, and as Forceberry alluded to 2 years ago (a perfect note, really), this is a stunning rebuttal to 50 years of thinking about the Bobal grape.....

Made from biodynamically farmed Bobal sourced from a 35-yo vineyard. Macerated by treading whole bunches for a few days and then transferred to oak barrels for aging. 13% alcohol. Tasted blind.
Opaque black cherry color with a hint of youthful purple hue. Very rich, sweet and fruity nose with brooding, concentrated aromas of blackcurrant candies, boysenberries, cherry marmalade, some liquorice, a little bit of wild volatile character and light inky notes. Despite its sweetness, the aromas are quite attractive. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and supple on the palate with pure, juicy flavors of liquorice, sweet black cherries, some succulent plummy fruit, a little bit of savory old oak spice, a hint of bousenberry jam and a touch of plum juice. The wine is quite soft and smooth on the palate with medium-plus acidity and very gentle and easy tannins. The finish is slightly grippy with juicy, fruit-forward flavors of liquorice, black cherries, wild strawberries, some crunchy forest fruits, a little bit of earthy spice and a hint of salty licorice.
A very juicy, pure and vibrant Bobal that shows some sense of weight and concentration, yet no signs of overdoing things. A nice and well-made effort that shows how this derided grape variety can be made into a serious wine as well. What I'd want a bit more is higher acidity and slightly grippier tannins that would frame the sweet-toned and rich fruit character a bit better. Now the wine feels perhaps a bit too ripe and fruity. Overall a very enjoyable, approachable and vibrant effort, showing perfectly why Juan Antonio Ponce is considered to be the master of Bobal.

Ein perfekter Bobal. Noch ein paar Jahre reifen lassen und die hervorstechende Frucht tritt etwas zurück. Dann noch harmonischer.
