Ruby red with some brick color On the nose, tight at first, then rapidly bramble, dates, raspberries, and tobacco leaf magic Palate matches the nose Long finish
Got it at total wine in Orlando at a conference, total surprise

Coravinned and decided it did not have the structure to stand up to my Tri tip. Opened tonight to have with some cheese as a little snack and it is just perfect. Delicate for a zin but brr nice complexity, super smooth tannins leaving a faint hint of leather. Really nice!

Purple-garnet with a little bricking at the rim. Lots of brambly fruit on the nose, with some black peppercorn, allspice, clove, and pipe tobacco. Palate intensifies with blackberry compote, vanilla, and an extra helping of black pepper. Tannins are velvety. Medium acidity, medium body. Finish is substantial. Next several hours gave up pronounced notes of dark chocolate and black licorice, overlaying the blackberry and tobacco nicely. Drinking really well, but I'd bet it has another few years left in it.

At this point, this Zin is beginning to fade and show its age. Could this be from poor storage? (I bought it from a liquor store in Minnesota.) I don't know. My extensive experience with Ridge Zins going back 50 years tells me that the newer ones (from the last 20 years or so) simply don't age that well. They're wonderful young and should be appreciated for their great varietal character, but they simply don't hold up with time. My guess is low acidity and high pH. Perhaps if Ridge harvested earlier they might create better balanced and longer-lived wines. But of course, who am I to tell Ridge what to do?
