Heitz tasting room visit 7/1/17: From magnum. Aromas of dried flowers, cherries, dried herbs, anise. Beautiful dark fruits on the palate- still showing primary notes. Layers of secondary depth, hints of tertiary. Medium acid, silky tannins, full depth on the finish. Excellent- still showing youth.

Earthy aromatics with a touch of spice and plum. Brooding and dark in appearance, it remains a bit tart on the palate with flavors of spice, forest floor, blackberries and plum. It is starting to show its age but still has a bit of spunk left and finished nicely with a nice balance that one would expect at this age and from Heitz.

Cork 3/4 wet but bottom 1/5 flaked off. Nose definitively of a wet cedar forrest and blueberries soaked in honey. There is still some fruit on the front end of the palate. Blueberries and honey predominate. Short initial flavorful blast; then some EtOH; then disappears only to re-emerge about 30 seconds later... nice backlash. Great balance at this point in time. At it's best after it was decanted for about an hour. Alcohol went away. Likely to last another two to four years.

Tasted blind with 10 west coast wines from 1985 to 2002. Second most popular wine. Good fruit, no oxidation, hint of mint, nice finish.
