  • Today I learnt that my maternal grandmother (b. 7 November 1927 in Horst, Limburg) passed away on 23 November 2020. My maternal grandfather (b. 5 March 1926 in Zwolle, Overijssel) died on 11 August 1989, and this was the wine we all drank together on Christmas Day 1988, the last Christmas when both my grandparents were still alive. I loved them very much and I dedicate this bottle to their memories. In 1988 it was quite rich and plummy for a 1981, and 33 years later it is still remarkably fresh, firm and tannic, cool and minerally, structurally completely intact, with vestiges of fruit (rosehip) and a mildly nutty, autumnal character. A wine with a firm backbone, that "leaves the palate dry but perfumed", to quote another nonagenarian (b. 2 May 1927 in West Riding, Yorkshire) who also passed away in 2020.

  • Lovely, rich, dark Pinot-fruit, hint of sweetness; smooth and balanced, elegant, not big but lovely sève; lovely length, complete. A successful, elegant 1981.
