  • Cork, 13.5% alc. Cheap quality cork.

Intense orange peel, smoke, and wet rocks. Interesting!

Very tannic; a bit Nebbiolo-like. There’s a strange funky metallic finish that persists for quite some time after swallowing; it’s not particularly pleasant, but maybe that’s part of this Etna wines thing. Leave overnight to check whether air helps.

NO! Despite the nose appearing OK, (some spiky VA notwithstanding) the palate is a horrid mess. Dirty mouse cage is the best descriptor. Very feral, and disgusting. Totally undrinkable.

FAULTY. All bottles will be sent back to retailer.

  • Fruit from the Contradas of Crasa and Calderara, vines app. 80 years old, planted at app. 650 metres above sea level. Cement only, unfined, unfiltered, unoaked. 80% Nerello Mascalese, and the rest is made up of indigenous varieties including Nerello Cappuccio, and Mirello Rossa. Ripe Morello cherries, bursting with smoky minerality, hint of blood orange, flavoursome, silky texture with firm (almost Nebbiolo-like) but finely grained skin tannins, pure and fresh, good weight (13.5% ABV), very good length. Very expressive of the Etna. At restaurant Edel by Dennis, Amsterdam, NL.

  • Better than last time. Smoky fruit with a ferral edge - really energetic with lashes of iron and volcanic sulfur surrounding the core of cherry fruit. Tannins still quite grainy. Character aplenty here.

  • Full of character and rustic charm - lots of smoky volcanic notes surround the fruit, which is really lively and scented with rosemary and thyme. Some sour cherries and wild berries, this dances in your mouth. Might develop a bit more in the next year, but just humming now.

  • The cork in this bottle was rather lose when I extracted it, yet luckily the wine was unaffected. I've seen quite a few reports of others who were not so lucky... When will the old world move to screwcap and save us all the pain? Anyway...Like most Etna Rosso, this is all about minerality rather than fruit. Vibrant and bright, showing volcanic rock / ash, morello cherry, licorice root and almond paste. Coarse yet open-knit tannins a feature rather than a distraction. A wine of terroir. Fingers crossed for my remaining bottles.
