  • Not blind

Pnp. This is still a powerhouse. 8 years in.

Nose of bark and tobacco. Tannins and heavy oak on the palate too.

Acidity on the back in for at least 5 to 10 more years.

Hl 2. Fd 2 with strong acidity on the finish but not too distracting.

  • Popped and poured, dark garnet/ruby, youthful. Forward, uncomplicated nose redolent with ripe berries, cassis, mint, subtle pipe tobacco and hints of vanilla spice from oak. Some heat as well. Medium-plus body, nicely concentrated with well-balanced acidity. On the palate, wow...serious depth of fruit here, think layers of the ripe berry notes from the nose but amped up to 11. And as always, Mike Smith's signature is written all over this one through his incredible knack for making wines that are so ridiculously lush, silken and velvety that it's rather easy to run out adjectives with which to describe them - just a textural masterpiece. As for the tannins, they're certainly lurking within the depths underneath but plus concentration and lovely texture completely veils them throughout a lasting close of pure deliciousness. And sure, one could nitpick that this one isn't particularly complex...and so the eff what?? If you want a nose to dwell upon, drink one of Mike's many outstanding Syrahs instead!!
But back to the wine at hand, while it undoubtedly has an extended aging window, why even wait? Seriously. So on that note, enjoy this wine now and over the next 5+ years, preferably with any non-wino who needs their socks knocked off!!

  • Well made cocktail wine to me, but after 8+ years can’t see how the heat and glycerine ever get to a balanced place. Not objectionable at the release price, but the cost of these at this point seems to be more about brand and winemaker reputation than value.

  • Ripe plum, prune, blackberry, concentrated licorice, fig, pinecone, sweet tobacco and cocoa powder. Fantastic wine
