  One of the many highlights of this range, the Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is exceptional. A great enveloping wine, the Montestefano wraps the palate with surprising depth. Today, the Montestefano is completely embryonic, yet it exudes depth, resonance, and pure class. The Montestefano is one of the most complete wines in the selection for the way it skillfully balances intensity and fruit structure. However, readers will need to be patient.

  Deep and youthful color, very primary, but very classic too. Notes of deep dark berries, some red berries too, tar, graphite, some violets, there is also some deep mineral note and some leather. Medium-full bodied, with medium-high tannin that is excellent quality and high acidity. Very good length. This still feels pretty young, but super classic, with very good potential. Something for purists. (93+)

  Barolo and Barbaresco 2014s at Terra Rossa (Terra Rossa, London N1): Pot pourri and forest floor on the nose. Fine boned yet with weight and energy. Really lovely balance and v classy and seems to speak of its place. My #2 WOTN.

  2014 Barolo and Barbaresco (Terra Rossa): Musky, dark-toned nose, the fruit having a cassis quality rather than the more typical Nebbiolo cherry or strawberry. Again pretty dark on the palate, and also round and ripe, the tannins being well-integrated into and concealed by the fruit. A touch of something savoury too. Although quite approachable already, this weighty wine will almost certainly benefit from 5-10 more years in bottle.
