  • Defying age, the 1928 Beychevelle still shows a densely-fruited blackberry nose. The aromatic profile is undoubtedly complex, with loamy, mulchy, nutty, black coffee, and nori notes complementing the fruit. It shouldn't be surprising knowing the vintage, but this is still so tannic! Like other 1928s, this is in no danger of fading imminently. It's funny to think now of those who complain that the 1986s will never come around - many said the same thing of the '28s when they were as old as the '86s are now. The virtues of patience!

  • Nose: Woodsy and spicy nose with sanded mahogany, espresso and cinnamon. Palate: Shockingly remains tannic, but that core of tannin is hanging onto beautiful notes of blackberry, chestnut, clove and spiced cherry.

A great wine from a strict vintage, that created a fantastic comparison with the 1929 beside it. Drank with EC.

  • Beautiful soil signature with mushroom and umami flavors. Wet earth flavors on the mid palate that initially were muted but then blossomed and lasted forever on the back palate. Tannins were a little too pronounced.

  • From a bottle with mid-shoulder fill. The cork came out in a million pieces with only the lower quarter remaining intact. We did not decant but enjoyed over the course of two to three hours straight from the bottle.

We expected tertiary aromas in the nose, but this was a different story altogether. The smell was warm and oily-thick, reminiscent of a paraffin lamp, old dark wood from a colonial history museum, forest honey, resin, amber & opium. Hypnotic, alluring, sensual and timeless at the same time. Practically warming up and paralyzing the entire face, it was almost impossible to take the nose out of the glass. Easy 100 pts. On the palate a little less thick, yet highly refined, with well-defined structure and very faint, perfectly integrated residual tannins. 97 points.

After opening, the wine improved steadily over the first hour and then remained in excellent shape for the rest of the evening. Our original plan was to have dinner later, but it was just impossible to have anything as profane as food after this sublime wine. The most fascinating bottle of red I had the honor to enjoy to date. 99 pts.
