Befitting a New Year, I am excited to review this vintage of a new wine the Dumol Wester Reach Chardonnay 2016.
Like many a winery, Dumol has set aside plantings from six of their vineyards: Ritchie, Lorenzo, Dumol Estate, Dutton-Hansen, Dutton-Jentoft, and Charles Heintz vineyards, all from Russian River, to create a wine of both substance and strength. Given the age of some of the vines, 44 years, it is no surprise that the wine presents itself starting with a deeper golden hue and aromas of citrus fruit with a hint of honeysuckle and nuttiness. Barrel fermented and aged for twelve months in 35% new French Oak and complete malolactic fermentation, it also presents to the drinker minerality intertwined with citrus and stone fruit notes, softer layers (creaminess) leading to a long vibrant and somewhat spicy finish.
Andy Smith, winemaker and partner, has been at the helm since its inception in 1996, initialing making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but has since expanded to produce wines from both Napa and Sonoma areas and including wines made from varietals Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Viognier. Given their cult status, most of their wines are only available direct from the winery, the inclusion of their Wester Reach Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with their slightly higher production, enables those wines to be sold via traditional means, although I seem to recall one or two of their single vineyard wines around, I wouldn’t count on finding them.
Always highly rated, it’s worth the effort to “Reach” out to find their wines.
Cheers

Terrific Light yellow color, notes of honey and citrus. Lively nose and wonderful finish. A lovely wine.

Very similar to my prior tasting notes. Delicious! Drink up! It won’t get any better with age.
