  • Just a slight step behind the 2012 tasted 2 nights ago. This 2013 is a bit more tightly wound, less open and giving than the 2012 at this moment. Still an extremely enjoyable champagne and I think the ultimate quality of the two vintages is about the same.

  • Similar to my notes from last year. There is a profile here that reminds me a bit of Krug in that it contains a beautiful richness that is compelling and flavorful without being heavy or overly doughy. Les Barres is more focused and complex than Krug, and is also sans the banana peel flavor that some Krug bottlings posses.

This bottle is in a perfect drinking window. A good combination of breadth and energy. A well-honed example of the sometimes rustic Pinot Meunier varietal. Drink now and over the next handful of years to best maintain freshness (unless you're into the whole 20 year old oxidative thing).

  • We used to drink wines by Alexandre more often but nowadays it's much more complicated to find his wines with some time after disgorgement, but we found this one today so we're happy. Very meunier-heavy aroma with lots of coconut, pineapple, passion fruit, guava, yellow plums, overripe apples, and cranberries; some aromatic herbs such as parsley, fennel, and some eucalyptus and white pepper; very sapid with sea salt, some wet stones and a general mineral feeling, metallic notes, a little smoke, and oxidative/oaky on the finish.
The truth is that we've always found Alexandre's wines pleasurable even in their youth; Les Barres is one of our favorite plots of his, with a very particular and characteristic personality. The texture is very creamy with a delicate, almost ephemeral effervescence. This 2013 is already an interesting bottle to drink, although it could easily be aged for several more years.

  • Bruised lemon rind, ginger, red apple flesh, dough/yeast, olive oil, yellow pear skin, almond paste, oyster shell, dried apricot, over-ripe grapefruit, and some white travertine/chalk rock. Impeccable complexity, balance, and an athletic body that offers a perfect combo of meatiness and finesse. Faint mineral and subtle floral notes lift the finish. Effervescence is perfectly gauged, allowing for the kaleidoscope of flavors to share the spotlight with each other upon execution.

95-96+ points. Drinks great now. This will continue to age gracefully and provide a platform for notable flavor development for the next decade++.

Designated “No. 13” on the label: 2013 base. Also labeled as being bottled in 2014 with a 2018 disgorgement. Great Champagne. Very similar to the 2012, with a little more of a cleaner cut, focused complexity, and chiseled framework on this bottle. Not an astringent or biting element to be found here. Nice flavor expansion for an Extra Brut PM.

  • That one I like it. Still simple but with more complexity. Fresh herbs, acacia, chamomile and elderflowers. Salty palate with good length and very intense bubbles.
