Hopped on a plane and came to Sydney to inspect the Strayaaan wine scene a bit. One of our first stops was Love, Tilly Divine, a cosy bar-bistro in Darlinghurst. We felt so at home here (read at Wine RVLT). The atmosphere is intimate, but buzzing. The wine list is extensive, the staff are friendly and the food is inventive, based mostly on an Italian theme. The list is so well-crafted and, even though big, it's comfortable and simple to navigate through the 20-something pages.
Getcha freaka on! We go straight for the off-dry Rizza and vegemite-parmesan bites. Not the best pairing, but both are delicious on their own. A baby Riesling, just starting to come out of its shell. Smells like fresh paint, which makes me reminisce of those spring cleaning days of renovation and intoxication. Just like the paint, the taste of this wine makes me fall into a trance. Opens up to notes of green apple, passionfruit and ripe lemon. No sign of development at all. High, razor-sharp acid highlights the fruit gorgeously and is backed up by just the right amount of residual sugar. Mind you, the sweetness is not here to overwork the wine. Its role is just to make it juicier and more concentrated. Even though it's highly approachable now, this will just keep on giving and developing. Great job by John Hughes, putting a seal on my favorite Riesling outside of Europe.

Polish Hill River fruit, 6% alcohol and 58 grams of residual sugar. It is John’s nod to the wines of the Mosel and a beauty at that. Super complex notes of lychee, preserved citrus, sherbet and musk lolly. It is rich and powerful yet light on its feet. It has great length and a clean and energetic finish.

Thai lunch (Ben and Estella's place, Parramatta): Kerosene, green apple, lime. Juicy, off-dry, same flavour profile as the nose but no kerosene, long, nice especially with food.

Clare Valley Expo (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Sulphur, green apple, perhaps a little citrus. Juicy, very apple with some residual sugar. Simple but pleasant.
