Purplish dark ruby. Open for business. Classic violet and and darker fruit tones. A stony/mineral backbone. Youthful tannins that grip in the front of the mouth but don’t distract from a very delicious package

Alongside two other young norther Rhones ('17 Rouchier and '16 Barge), it was interesting to see this fall stylistically between the meatier and denser Rouchier and clean and somewhat austere Barge. A bit more polished than I was expecting and a bit of demerit for not being terribly complex, but still very good nonetheless.

Dark red and purple, almost inky. Black fruit and white pepper on the nose. On the palate, you first meet dark fruit - blackberry and cassis - and licorice, which unfold lightened by florals, minerals, and white pepper, and black olive. There's a medium body here, and while there's plenty of oomph from the dark, cool fruit, the minerality and earthiness keep this far from sappy. There's also a faint carbonic element giving freshness. A wonderful example of Saint Joseph that will last for years, this wine seems to have a foot in forward thinking winemaking and a foot in the classic tradition.

Curiosity killed the cat (or the bottle). Figured would check in on the first bottle of a case. Leaner and more elegant than recent vintages, but pretty tight and unforthcoming. Glad to have as a reference point, but definitely need to wait a few years to try again.

Plum, raspberry, leather, sanguine (grilled meat, bacon, iron) black pepper, violets, clay.
Acidity medium plus, medium, focused mid palate tannins.
Lovely wine, showcasing the value and variety of St Joseph wines. Elegant yet masculine. Deserves some tasty barbecue!
