Charity wine pairings to benefit Whatcom Hospice House. (Samish Hill, Bellingham, WA): Carefully decanted off all sediment 8 hours before serving. This nearly 54 year old bottle had the audacity to be more dark ruby colored than brown. Broad clear meniscus belied its age more than its color. Sure, there were a lot of rich earthy tertiary notes, balsamic, and tar, but also great freshness with black raspberries and cherries. An amazing bottle.

It’s hard to put a score on a 52 yr old wine but it was remarkably fresh and delicious. 1 hour with cork out and then decanted and drank. Opened up over 2 hours beautifully. None of the funk that I typically find in older Bordeaux. Everything was soft and integrated. Really makes the case for aging barolo longer than I can usually wait.

Good fill, excellent looking cork. Double-decanted off sediment, then served a few hours later. Deeply bricked, mahogany color. Hardly any fruit left, there are maybe some hints of dried strawberry and bitter orange, but this is fully tertiary, full of earth, iron, beef blood, tea. The palate is fully resolved and light in body at this stage, but it puts on a little weight with aeration. The flavors continues in the tertiary mode. But it's not spiky yet or drying out. Still material to enjoy here if you like this kind of thing but needs to be drunk up.
