To each their own. The first two sentences of Wine Spectator's 2018 review says it all for me: "Aged in oak for 18 months... This is a darkly extracted and contemporary wine.." And Vinous: "I would like to see the new oak settle down a bit from here." Round, high extraction and new oak treatment. Just not my preference.
Update: tried again on day-2. The vanilla/oak is reduced significantly leaving a round, fruity (plumb) wine that is enjoyable on its own or with food. Just enough tannin and acidity for backbone. Day-2 was quite different than day-1; I suggest giving this a lot of air. A decent QPR at $30.
A very well made Super Tuscan, with floral, stone, and raspberry on the nose. On the palate a wine of powerful structure and tannin. Seems like a Sangiovese at first. Tight, structured, and brooding, this took hours to open up fully to red raspberry, sage, intense minerality.
On day 2, more purple fruit arrives, as does a hint of menthol and mint, but with the same solid structure.
50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc.
This is a 91.5-92

Smooth tannins, purity of fruit, good balance, medium body, lots of acid that stood up to the whole wheat ziti with veggies, ricotta in tomato sauce, a classy wine that is probably not available now but would drink again.

Brief recollection from lunch:
(Decanted for 90 minutes prior to consumption).
Plummy, fruity nose of a more stewed nature. Stewed, black fruits on the palate, with a mineral undertone. Oak tones are present, but integrated.
Guests tasted this blind. Consensus: aged Loire Cabernet Franc.
Quite delicious with a grilled bavette and a cheese-less potato/onion gratin.
