  • CSIMM161 did a great job reviewing the 2016 VDL. Here is a 21 month update- as the wine has continued to evolve in the bottle, the dark fruit is very welcoming, the tannins are smooth yet confirm the wine will age gracefully for several more years. I give the 2016 a 96 rating and believe time will further reward those who are patient.

  • Del Dotto Tasting + Barrels & Beasts; 10/5/2018-10/6/2018: From barrel. Energetic and spritely, this version of VdL was pumping some upper register red and black fruit and currant flavors along with an undercurrent of subtle riper bass notes on the mid-palate. Finished a little higher toned on the back end under the weight of a tannic clamp that offered frame, but also forbade the richness from fully materializing.

This is the most terroir-driven experience I’ve had with this wine (which is good). In 2014 and 2015, it had a significant amount of fruit flavor, but I had to really dig into the profile to find Pritchard Hill. With 2016, the oak and ripe fruit isn’t masking some of its grippy mountain characteristics (again, a good thing given the site it is supposed to be representing). However, it displayed as young indeed and will need time to fully come together. A wine to hold for 4-5 years once it hits bottle.

    93-94+ points from this sample.

DAY TWO SAMPLE: At Barrels & Beasts the following day, I had another barrel sample of the 2016 Villa Del Lago and it was performing much better in terms of accessibility and giving core fruit flavors. A more massive attack and overall weight to the wine was present as well. As before, a great grip and frame. 95+ points from this sample.
