Bienvenue a Champagne; 4/20/2023-4/29/2023 (Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers): This didn’t really get the focus that it probably should have as we’d finished our starters by the time we poured it and in fact had already poured the reds as well. Still - it was a very enjoyable style of wine. I think overpriced at this point. This is meant to be more of a table white wine. Great for me as I don’t love Chardonnay (unless there are bubbles) and so I always like to see the Aligote make it out when it’s white burg. There’s more spiciness to the grape. Fun to try.

The remarkably pretty bouquet showed a luxurious display of ripe peaches overlaying crushed stone minerality, with sweet floral and confectionary spice, dried yellow flowers and hints of moist earth. On the palate, I found soft, almost creamy textures, which coasted across the senses with emerging minerals and acids, carrying notes of sweet and tart apple. It finished on a tart pop of mouth watering acid and citrus, green apples and pretty inner florals.

A private lunch (Restaurant Schwarzenstein - Nils Henkel **, Geisenheim, Germany): I think the note below by CHBEAUMONT hits the nail on the head. In addition I would only like to mention the lemon curd flavour and the salinity on the finish. It’s a perfectly fine Aligoté, clean as a whistle and totally true to type, but it is not hugely exciting. And it completely lacks the oak and the tell-tale matchstick nose which used to define older vintages.

Bright tart peach nose. Almost stinging acidity, but balanced and lovely drinking now.
