Visited Cahors in 2008, and particularly enjoyed the wines of Ch Haut-Montplaisir. Asked Corner Wines (Plano, TX) to find me a case of whatever available in the USA, resulting in a 2002 Prestige delivered to me in Washington DC in 2009/10. Malbec 100%, full bodied, and unfiltered, the first bottle’s bouquet was unending, and while perhaps approachable, I was hoping for a more muted Malbec. The usual young abundance of tannins of this varietal made for rough going at first. Every two years following the wine tried kept developing, tempting me for predictions for when I would reach my goal. With a half a case left, and now 16 years of age, the wine is a treasure. Bouquet still lovely, with a unique Malbec character, a body glowing softly and forthright. Waiting worked its magic. A real experience, a lovely gentle Malbec. A wonderful experience, perhaps the best Malbec I have ever had. Holding easily for 16 years, the once rough and tumbled Malbec is like a young and exquisite Cornas. Softened mellow berries in cedar boxes, full and tempting, like no other Malbec I have had. Full fruit and many most pleasant solids. Enjoyed with a Pork roast and potatoes, the wine reminded engaging for hours. Find some if you can. Highly recommended to the patient. It is a Malbec in all its glory.
