  • Smells wonderful, taste is marred by a moldy note on the finish. I could sniff this all night but barely palatable.

  • Double magnum, double decanted and left in the bottle for 3hours before serving. Lots of dark fruit and raisin on the nose, tannins still holding strong but nicely integrated with lots of acid left. Very enjoyable with lamb shoulder.

  • First bottle pulled with cork apparently having dropped into the wine a long time ago, ullage was 2 inches under the shoulder; looked ok, if rather dark, and tasted like acetone smells. The second bottle was fine, the cork just soaked, and much like the previous, strong color and fruit pleasantly aged.

  • Bottled in 1993. Total production 302,000 bottles and 8,400 magnums. 13% alcohol. Tasted half-blind.

Moderately translucent and somewhat evolved cherry red color. Rather evolved and slightly green-toned nose with aromas of wizened dark fruits, some green notes of dill, a little bit of aldehydic Fino Sherry character, light black cherry tones, a hint of dried cranberry and a touch of dusty earth. Overall the nose has a somewhat dry, oxidative feel to it. The wine is medium-bodied, quite lean and slightly metallic on the palate with crisp and rather straightforward flavors of tart lingonberries, blood, some savory wood, a little bit of gravelly earth, light vanilla tones and a hint or rusty iron. Although the firm tannins retain some grip to them, the structure leans almost solely on the very high acidity. The finish is firm, long and slightly hollow with dried-out flavors of tart lingonberries, old leather, some sour cherry bitterness, light metallic notes, a little bit of tangy salinity, a hint of crunchy cranberry and an oxidative touch of soy sauce.

A quite good but slightly over-aged Rioja Reserva that has started to thin out with age. The wine is still relatively alive, but isn't showing its best anymore, coming across as rather old and slightly metallic. The wonderfully high acidity lends great freshness and intensity to the wine, but it unfortunately has started to become too dominant a trait here as the fruit has faded out, making the wine come across as a bit unbalanced. I can imagine this must have been a lovely wine in its youth, but now it is already fading away. Time to drink up - no further aging is going to help this wine.

  • Beautiful wine. Nowhere near peak or being done. Fantastic acidity promising further years of enjoyment. A whole bouquet of various smells and tastes all around forest, mushrooms, autumn leaves and moss. Sweet and extremely savoury.
