  • This example of 21 Montrose offered a fleshy, broad, warm nose of wild berries, leather, smoke, and brown spices conveyed with a succulent, sweet richness. It did not seem to flag over the course of the evening, which was extraordinary, but it was decanted rather a long time (approximately 90 min) due to a cork mishap prior to us tasting it - so we could have missed an initial flourish.

  • The 1921 Montrose might well be my favourite vintage at this address. An extraordinary bouquet of menthol, exotic spice, baked black fruit, rich soil tones and truffle is followed by dense, rich wine of incredible savoury amplitude, persistence and intensity. Magical stuff that is going to cruise past the century marker with ease.

  • Bottled history is always a thrill. Released just a few years before the creation of Art Deco and the great depression, the wine is bricky in color. Smoke, tobacco, cigar box, truffle, forest floor, spice and black cherries are the first thing you notice. The wine is full bodied, with an old school, slight rusticity to the texture in the sweet and spicy red berry finish.

  • Montrose Tasting at IOD in London: Surprise of the night, beautiful wine, orange color, spices and some chopped caramelized orange peel in the nose, quite a long aromatic finish. Great effort, perfect aging!

  • Next up, a quartet of Montrose (21, 24, 28, 29). The 21 had a touch of "pool chlorine" on the nose. But what a great wine in the mouth. Complex, with peppers and earth. Outstanding, an incredible wine.
