Jeroboam Club Tasting: Wines of Portugal (130 Cheltenham Road, Bristol): Deep plum red, garnet. Edgy green-tinged fruit but seductively silky with creamy oak. Beefy, meaty, peppery tastes in the mouth; liqourice too; unusual; medium-full bodied; dry tannins; a slightly bitter finish. Better on the nose than the palate. Not sure this will ever develop sweet fruit to balance the tannins.

Wines of Portugal: Leeds Trade Tasting (Park Plaza Hotel, Leeds): The nose is deep and plummy with sweet blackberry fruit. Glorious attack. There’s a delicate silkiness, but it’s also very mouthfilling. Elegant and restrained until the finish, when the tannins don’t so much grip as grab. A bit overdone. Good/Very Good.
