  • Jaen in Portugal is synonymous with Mercia in Spain; according to the producer website, this is 100% Jaen. Decanted and enjoyed with pork tamales, Spanish rice and beans. Presents a deep ruby color, almost purple; full body and medium high alcohol (14.1% ABV). Initially, slightly closed, but as it opens, secondary notes lead: pepper, briary underbrush, granite minerality, and dark chocolate, followed by juicy black and red berry, plums, and bitter cherry pit. Developing, without a lot of tertiary notes. Dry mouthfeel with both tannin and acidity providing notable structure. Solid, very good finish. Even at nine years, this seems like it could go another 6-8+ years.

  • This took a bit of time to show its full character. Somewhat better on night 2. Restrained fruit but nice balance with earthy notes. Medium body, pretty good with wide range of food. Solid QPR but by standards of Portugal not a great value
