  • Med lemon. Pronounced. Neutral primary character, lemon, oxidative style with oak influence. High acidity, med body, 13,5% abv. Long finish.

  • Not shy, Strongly flavoured, they mature in neutral barrels, given the strength of flavour this tells me Verdicchio asorbs barrel flavours easily. Tangy finish. Tertiary flavours dominate. Butterscotch, lemon rind. Full bodied, acidity medium plus. Long, complex. Drink now unless you like even more tertiary flavours. Verdicchio from Marche.

  • Another great discovery in my queste to have tasted a wine from every DOCG in Italy. I’m getting close to finising this (see also my previous TN and stories). But those last 27 out of 76 DOCG that I still wanted to taste proved to be the most difficult to find.
This one I found in a small Enoteca in Castigliona della Pescaia, a city that we visit almost every year during our summer holiday. I actually found two ‘missing’ DOCG there from my list: this one and the Torgiano Riserva that I posted a week ago.

    Back to this wine.
I often say that I’m not a fan of white wines because they lack complexity. Except maybe for some beautiful Meursault or Riesling from Mosel area. Now this wine solidly proves me wrong on that preconception!

Straw yellow color. Intense and evolving aromas ranging from all kinds of yellow fruits, green apple, Jasmin and Lillies to hazelnut, saffron and a hint of sage…. wow! It has an intens mouthfeel with a facinating palate tingeling sour/bitter/sweet/spicy mixture supported by great minerality and some, almost light red-wine-like, tannins. It is very persistent and remains with a fascinatingly evolving finish that seems to go on forever.
It was was veryt interesting to see the aroma’s and the palate evolve with temperature: served at a slightly too low 9 degrees and probably moving all the way up to 20 degrees while on the table, it kept on evolving in an interesting way. Often wines are too lean when to cold and too cloggy when warmer. This wine just keeps on evolving and stays interesting troughout a pretty wide temperature range.

Not sure why I give it only 93 points. If this where a red wine I probably would have rated it 95+! It’s likely still my preconception about white wines at play here.

This wine was a great pairing with the Ossobucco alla Milanese with the traditional saffron Rissotto. The wine was an amazing partner for the risotto, and still stood up well against the pretty rich Ossobucco!

    ADDED 2 days later:
We've kept about two glasses in the bottle which we took 2 days later. It was stored at +/- 8 degrees Celcius. It was still a nice wine but most of the magic in the complexity was gone. A solid 90pt still, but not de magic...

  • A wine that really needs food to come alive, but when it does, wow. Slightly wizened orchard fruits with flashes of white flowers, saffron, and hay. A golden preserved lemon halo emerges with more time, managing to balance freshness, complexity, and richness together. Very elegant and unassuming, but really works its way into every nook in your palate.

  • Intense, yet precise and appealing aromas with golden yellow fruits, summer flower, nut and dried butter that create joy. Nice full-bodied wine with this wonderful greasy mouthfeel that also manages to preserve freshness in a good way. Oily juicy yellow fruit, against stone fruit and grape, nice salt minerality and light butter on a good finish with some wood. Really distinctive wine that shows Verdicchio in a good and complex way. Give the wine time, but this is really good craftsmanship. 92 points.
