  • Exquisite, aged with grace and so young and vigorous in style this 05 Les Ruchets by J-L Colombo. Dark, dense aged-marked red in appearance. Super-expressive and classic Syrah nose singing with fine-tuned black currants & blackberries, minerality, black pepper, herbs, black olives. Powerful, energetic medium+-bodied palate, lots of grip, still evolving. Rusty tannic structure, superbly fresh, flavours as per nose with a fair amount of meaty notes emerging mid-palate. Tannic-dry and spicy, moreish finish. Fantastic!

  • Really solid, agree this can age longer. Brambly fruit and spice on the nose, tight in the mouth with good acidity, herbs, and fruit. Iron and tannins come in on the long finish.

  • Still needs a few years before peak. Tasted blind and no one realized this was as old as it is. This was the second time I’ve had a Ruchets at 15 years old and wished I had waited 5 more years.

  • Dark ruby with a slight hint of browning. Nice dark black fruits on the nose. Hints of menthol, truffle, a medicinal smell, white pepper, red berries and red plum. The palate had lots red and black fruits with oak, earth blackberry and plum. The finish possesses good character of red berries, slate earth, oak and leather. It was the best out of my 3 bottles had the smoothest tannins and lots of succulent dark red fruits.

  • Vinetasters: Cornas vs. Cote Rotie (Skokie, IL): Served double blind in a flight of Cornas or Cote Rotie. There seems to be a little bit of woodiness on the nose here, but it's more of that old leathery type of oak than modernist polish. Nice aromatics here, with a slight bit of earth and black fruit. The palate shows good acidity and more red than black fruit, and the tannins are pretty bracing here. I'm picking up more rusticity, so I would guess that this is a Cornas, despite the fruit profile. The acidity is bright, with some red cherry overtones. My 2nd, group's 10th.

    (Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas Les Ruchets, Rhône Valley) Cornas is a classic Rhône appellation, but it remains perhaps the most underappreciated source of great Syrah in the world. There’s never really enough Cornas to go around, with barely 16,000 cases produced each year; the toll taken in tilling these spectacularly steep, crushed-granite-and-limestone slopes, lashed by the brutal mistral wind, demands nothing less than a vigneron’s heart, soul, and blood. The modernist Colombo instills a hint of violet and raspberry into the nose of his ’05, but it’s buried beneath whiffs of granitic terroir, scrubbed with oily, shrubby garrigue and green-olive herbaceousness. The wine is burly and brickish, and although the tannins are neither hard nor astringent, they definitely drive the palate, all but obliterating the flavor of classic Syrah juice—a chewy, violet-scented, black-and-blue fruitiness—that seeps into the finish. This, of course, is wine for wood-grilled meats, especially well-aged beef and fenneled sausages. Hot Picks
