This pairing, marbled steak, did not mask the jammy streak which I noted last time. I doubt if I will buy any more bottles from 2018 and await with some trepidation the 2019 and 2020 to see whether this estate's wines will return to reliable right-bank stand-bys. Quite good.

Courteillac has been a standby QPR Bordeaux (c.€10) for me in most vintages since about 2000. Often it has been a good ringer for GCC St.Émilion and the estate enjoyed a star in the RVF's annual guide. A few years ago, Dominique Méneret sold the estate to Chinese investors and recently RVF removed the star. This is my first bottle of a vintage since those two events and I was curious to see how it was still performing. First impressions were good with some rich right bank fruit, acceptable oak barrel patina and decent balancing acidity but gradually there emerged some cloying from a jammy streak, a certain porty hint and stronger tannins than I recall in previous vintages. This could just be a 2018 vintage effect that may attenuate with more age or be masked by a different pairing. Quite good.
