  • Followed the Muga 95 res esp with this. A little more 'muddy' than the 95.The 95 had brighter red fruits. Slight barnyard note on the nose, still nice core of sweet fruit with typical tertiary development. Drinking well, more heat on the finish than expected from the 12.5%. Very nice bottle, I hope the remaining couple of bottles are as good. The 25-30 yr mark seems to be the sweet spot for these wines.

  • From Magnum. Inky purple and really young. Probably a decade from maturity in this form, and will probably outlive us all.

  • This is a very pleasant example of old-school Rioja, although it is well into its declining years. The tannins are fully resolved, and the wine has now softened to a very feminine, if overly light, example of the style. It was ready to drink at PnP, but a half hour in the decanter brought the wine together much better. And it had begun to fall apart after about 2.5 hours.

Remaining bottles should be on the list to consume though, as the clock is tickng on this. I am captivated by old Rioja, but this is lightening in every aspect, including the lovely tertiaries.

  • Smells like classic Rioja, extremely complex. Dusty earth and worn leather dominate nose, with cranberries, currants, and desert rose in background. Palette is pure silk, showing the nose with fruit full and ripe at first, then fading to dried. Long silky finish with dusty tannins. This is what to love about Rioja.
