Let me start by saying I love the Ferrando Carema; this is my first sample of the black label; the nose is immediately expressive with alpine strawberry, bright cherry, a hint of orange peel, some mint, some floral notes. This was served with some Barolo and Barbaresco and the difference was quite obvious; this was more red fruited and fresh with a slightly more elegant and lithe feel to it; this is definitely more structured than the white label and is absolutely on the young side. It needs at least 5 more years, but really probably won't be fully in its prime for another 10-15 and will cruise along for many years after that. Delightful stuff.

Tasted next to the Le Pianelle Bramaterra 2014, this seems a little more open and radiant. Beautifully perfumed, with notes of dark plum, dark cherries, some leather, menthol, sweet spices, there are also some balsamic notes and some licorice. It‘s medium-full bodied, with excellent mid-palate persistence, it has pretty high acidity and medium-high tannin that is very good quality but might still need another 3+ years to integrate a little more. Very good length. A really nice Carema full of tension, energy and precision. My first time having this and I am very impressed. (94+) On day 2 it‘s even more aromatic, with notes of candied violets, dark plum and beautiful minerality and spices. Lovely wine.

Hard for me to get much more from the black label in this pairing.
