  • This wine is mainly characterized by black fruits probably as a result of an higher percentage of Syrah and Mourvèdre in the blend (there was serious coulure of the Grenache in 2017). The color is opaque black-red with a purple rim, with on nose and palate black cherries, blackberries, blueberries, licorice and beefstock. There are plenty of tannines, a refreshing acidity and good length. Te 15% alcohol is very well integrated.
The advantage of this Southern Rhône wine is that it is already irresistible young, while it can easily be kept for at least 5 years gaining in complexity.

  • Soumade stands for quality in this appellation in the Vaucluse. In fact it’s more or less my fetish domain as it was their wines which made me hopelessly fall in love wih the red wines of the Southern Rhône. This is normally a blend of 70%Grenache, 20%Syrah and 10%Mourvédre. In 2017 there was a serious coulure problem with the Grenache, so I don’t know if they had to recalibrate the blend in favour of the Syrah and Mourvédre. This is an excellent wine but markedly different from the 2015, which was characterized by lush ripe Grenache fruit an other red fruits. The 2017 has a youthful deep black-red color with a purple rim,on the nose black currants, cherries, cassis and blackberries. Black fruits and licorice on the palate, firm tannins good acidity and a long finish. The 15% alcohol is very well hidden but anyway it is better to serve this wine fresher (14°C is ideal for me). Delicious, the kind of wine that puts you in the good mood. Much better than their Gigondas from 2017.

  • Extremely young on the nose. Bright and energetic. Needs plenty of air to calm down, but it's worth it. Lovely raspberry and strawberry with huge peppery-spice. With more air a lovely cola component develops. Deep and intense on the pallette, with lots of vigour from the acidity and spice. Drinking well now, but I think this needs at least 3 years to really come into its own. At CHF 17 a bottle, this is absolutely killer value.
