To be fair here acquired this bottle and several others from unknown storage conditions or provenance but these wines were acquired for next to nothing...quite literally). This one appears to have been stored standing for some time as no sediment on side of bottle but plenty in bottom. That said the cork came out solid (I try to use gas popper on these older bottles when possible seems to work great) color was a deep cherry with some light browning on rim. First taste indicated it survived but need some air. Had some fruit left with a bit of raisin reminded me of cross between old bordeaux and maybe a light port. Certainly suspicious but still an enjoyable wine experience to see under these conditions an old Far Niente stood up to the challenge. A few extra points just for that!

This is drinking marvelously, better than expectations. The bouquet is bright and articulate of cherries, sous bois, graphite, garrigue, and sea breeze. The palate is sleek and chiseled, with ample fruit, structure, weight, and volume, and a salty, marine-like quality to the candied cherry fruit flavors. But it’s the perfect tension between acidity, freshness, and bottle age complexity that reels you in. Delicious and highly expressive of place. A true Napa Cabernet.

Tasted alongside a Joseph Phelps Cab from the same vintage and expected the Far Niente to stand up better than it did. Black cherries on the nose along with leather, cedar and sweet spice. Tart cherries on the palate, and a fair amount of acidity but no longer with a body to match. Not terrible but certainly a few years past its prime.
