Friday at the strand (Strand Cellars, Croydon): "Served blind. Whole bunch, sweet spice, slight alcohol warmth, black hued slightly plummy. Medium plus intensity acidity, black hued fruits, chalky drying woody tannins. This is under screwcap and is still fresh but not super complex. Interesting I thought this might be a kiwi pinto from central Otago from roughly 2014"

Varietal cherry and plum characters with underlying gamey notes and spice; savoury characters from stalk inclusion are evident, with attractive toasty French oak; the palate is round with silky texture and length. Screwcap.

I knew nothing about this wine other than it was $9.99 at a 60% discount, so I figured I'd give it a try. Opened and let sit for 30 minutes. Color was dark, ruby red with a slight brown tinge. Nose was cherry and pepper. Initial taste was cherry, nutmeg, and cinnamon. After an hour, the taste, texture and overall mouthfeel was very similar to the Belle Gloss Meiomi, which seems to me to be a classic California Pinot and one that I consider very good. On day 2 however, most of what I liked on Day 1 was gone and I ended up pouring out the last glass. The wine was nice overall but nothing extraordinary.

Dark opaque colour. Fleshy dark cherry, butterscotch & celery with a lingering finish. Missing the mineralityto catapult it to the 90s. A ringer for a good Cali-Pinot

(Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir) Bricking medium red color with pale meniscus; tart cherry, watermelon nose; watermelon, ripe cranberry palate with good acidity; medium-plus finish

Caught between two worlds, a bit acidic, medium aromatic; still, nicely balanced.
