I opened this with some trepidation, I think this is the third vintage, and the first with the wrap around starred "Astralis" label, minimal ullage Colour as excepted faded garnet , bricking , amber hues 15/15 Nose med intensity, very Bordeaux like surprising because it's 100% Shiraz ,cassis leather and faded fruit, smoky grilled meat licorice mocha some funk but this blew off 27/30 Palate medium body fruit has gone, leaving clean secondary and tertiary elements great complexity tobacco, Cassius, silky mouth feel mature spice caramel chocolate silky tannins long finish is exceptional very long 30+ seconds , soft acidity still on the palate 41/44 Overall Very good I enjoyed this mature Astralis 11/11
from the Winery Across the first vintages 1990 to 1993 the wine was titled ‘Clarendon Hills Shiraz’ however in 1994 the wine was rebranded to Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz off the back of his belief this wine was out of this world. Astralis 1994 was in fact Australia’s first $100 bottle of wine and it was adorned in a black 360 ˚ label peppered with golden stars to emphasise the definition of Astralis “pertaining to the stars'”. It was a thing of beauty.
