The 2007 Langhe Rosso 1593 is a varietal Dogliani Dolcetto from her oldest parcels that is refined for SIX years in15 and 10 hectoliter barrels and then rests for another four years in bottle prior to release. It slowly unwinds in the glass, at first tarry and intense, yet time reveals a complex bouquet of crushed blackberries, lavender, sage, hints of licorice and smoky dried meats. While silky smooth and fleshy in feel, tension quickly builds through a mix of brisk acids, minerals and tart wild berry fruits. This leaves a staining on concentration along with grippy tannins, tapering off persistent and with a purple-tinged floral thrust that tempts the imagination of what's to come with further bottle age. Anyone that doesn't understand the potential prestige and ageability of Dolcetto owes it to themselves to check this out. Revisit this beauty in another three years or more.

Double blind. Earthy black cherry and plum aromas with some wood. Palate is round with chewy suave youthful tannins. Some tar and earth. I was in Italy and guessing Brunello. Never had a Dolcetto this well rounded and interesting.

Recognizably dolcetto, but with all the rough edges gone. The note below describes it very well. I’ll just say that there’s an elegance, especially to the texture, that I really didn’t know was possible with this grape.

The nose was a classic mix of crushed blackberries, lavender and sweet spices, complemented by hints of black licorice, salt-cured meats, smoky minerals, chalk dust and peppery florals. On the palate, I found soft textures, accentuated by zesty acids as tart black fruits coated the senses with violet florals, saline-minerality, and grippy tannins. The finish was long, lightly structured and dry, showing masses of tart black fruits with a twang of acidity keeping everything energetic and fresh, while resonating on inner florals and a hint of hard red candies. I went in expecting a ripe vintage profile, and instead found a wonderfully classic Dolcetto with many years of evolution ahead of it. This is gorgeous stuff!
