Waited a little too long to drink my last bottle. This one was a bit cloudy and muddy and thin and acidic. Still had some fruit, but was well past its peak.

wow, 20 year old village wine and it's still a bit tannic, acidic, and shutdown. But with time it begins to unfold, black cherries and a bit of mocha, some mushroom, real acidic backbone. No hurry here B+

Chez G in Cornwall, pnp, perfect cork and level - dark, quite dense, ruby, some development; tending to redcurrant, earth, quite mineral, hefty and not particularly nuanced; med/full, long but less persistent, attractive quite sweet mid palate, gritty tannins covered by attractive if as yet simple fruit, more beef than transparency, mature but no rush. VGI (17).

A bit more open and complex than the bottle I had last year. Plenty of fruit, some earthiness and minerality, and ample acidity. No signs of fading and plenty of remaining structure. Should hold up for a while longer.

When I had this five years ago, I said it was angry and shutdown and to try again in 5-10 years. Well now it's five years later, and the structure has indeed softened and relaxed such that you can actually get some pleasure out of drinking this. This is a very ripe vintage of this wine, all black-fruited (as 99s tend to be) and still quite primary, but because it's Lafarge the ripe black fruit is cool and airy. The tannins here are still a bit gritty and I think this needs several more years to reach peak drinking. At this point it is actually a little Barolo-esque.

(Lafarge Michel Volnay Selectionées) Like the 'simpler' Lafarge villages, this wine has a personality quite different to the others, it's not the easiest drink right now, whereas all the others could, to my taste, be amply enjoyed. The colour is rather deep, a core of ruby-red that fades only slightly to the rim. Wide and fresh nose, red in complexion, deep red, eventually bordering on sweet blackcurrant. Fresh, linear, but well concentrated palate - very good - mouth watering acidity. I'd leave this another 5 years in the cellar, and will probably buy a few more.
